How online Chess960 works here

Chess960 — also written chess 960, also called Fischer Random, and marketed as Freestyle Chess — shuffles the back rank into one of 960 legal starting positions. Bishops go on opposite colours, the king stands between the rooks, and Black mirrors White. Everything after that is ordinary chess, which is why you can play Chess960 online without learning a new rulebook.

Each game here deals a fresh position, so there is no opening theory to memorise and no preparation to be caught by. That is the whole appeal: from move one you are working out the position rather than recalling it.

Ratings

You start at 1500. Ratings use Glicko-2, which tracks how confident it is in your number as well as the number itself — so your first handful of games move you a long way, and once the estimate settles the swings get smaller. A rating shown as provisional simply means the system is still working you out.

Castling, the one thing that catches people out

Castling in Chess960 ends with the king and rook on exactly the squares they reach in ordinary chess: castling short puts the king on g-file and the rook on f-file, castling long puts the king on c-file and the rook on d-file. The pieces can travel strangely to get there. On this board you castle by moving your king onto your own rook. There is a fuller explanation with diagrams.
