Carlsen won the 2026 FIDE Freestyle Chess World Championship, beating Fabiano Caruana 2.5-1.5 in the final — the decisive moment was game three, which he survived from what he called a lost position, then closed out the title with a draw in game four. He reached that final by beating Nodirbek Abdusattorov 3-1 in the semifinal, a match he'd led throughout.

The 2026 Championship was also a correction of sorts. Across the 2025 Grand Slam Tour, Carlsen won the season overall — 121 points, taking the Paris and Grenke Karlsruhe events outright — without ever winning the tour's own finale: Levon Aronian beat him head-to-head at the Cape Town Final in December, the one event of the five he didn't win a single game at. The World Championship two months later was the individual title that result had denied him.

Outside Chess960

Carlsen, born in Tønsberg, Norway in 1990, became a grandmaster at 13 and has held the world No. 1 ranking continuously since 2011 — longer than anyone else ever has. He was classical World Champion from 2013 until he chose not to defend the title in 2023, five times over; he has also held the World Rapid and World Blitz titles repeatedly, and his peak rating, 2882, remains the highest ever recorded. He plays Chess960 the way he plays everything else at this level: from a position nobody has prepared, which is a repeated theme across his results here.
